Ralph Jenkins - the player

At this year’s AGM Ralph Jenkins stood down after 25 years as treasurer of Tilehurst and then Theale and Tilehurst CC. Eddie rightly praised Ralph for his hard work as treasurer over the years and Alan Pyke gave some memories of Ralph as a player, recalling his performance at Moulsford (T&T vs. Moulsford - 8 June 1997) when he took his only five-fer for T&T in what was Phil’s first game behind the stumps.

However, as Alan said Ralph’s main cricketing performances were for Tilehurst CC and as evidence of what he could do with the ball here’s a Tilehurst CC league game from June 1989.

Tilehurst were playing Chawton in a Hampshire League match and elected to bat on winning the toss. Adriel Sumitra got the Tilehurst innings off to a good start but from 51-1 from 18 overs the Tilehurst innings stalled and then collapsed to 111 all out in the 41st over.

What those that remember playing at Victoria Recreation Ground might not be surprised to see is the proportion of runs in a low total scored in boundaries; just about two thirds.

Despite four early wickets for left arm opening bowler Ian Norman Chawton seemed to be cruising to victory with the score on 90-4 in the 23rd over; 22 runs in 19 overs with six wickets in hand seemed a formality.

Enter Ralph and his big turning off breaks. First Clarke was dismissed to give Tilehurst a sniff and when Jelley and Fisher soon followed Chawton nerves must have been jangling.

At the start of the 31st over the score was 95-7 and within four balls the match was over. With his first ball Ralph had Fisher lbw, Waterman was then bowled first ball and finally Alan Bunker took the catch to dismiss Spencer. Ralph had taken 6-3 in 24 balls to win the match for Tilehurst.
