Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Waltham St Lawrence 5th May 2001

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue..."

The latter was the language greeting the news that we couldn't contact Dave Harvey to allow him to add his experience to a mixture of the young and the not-so-young for this opening 2ndXI league fixture of the season at the pleasant Waltham St Lawrence ground.

Captain Puri lost the toss, together with his place on several Christmas lists, and his team was inserted on a slow but fairly true pitch. This proved the undoing of Moore the Younger and Adam Backhouse, both bowled by the tricky Rasool (no anagrams please, Alex!)

The captain and his one-legged "something old" played straightish and added 59 for the third wicket (new 2nd XI record for that wicket). David (great name) Withington then batted properly for his 25 which included some lovely shots. Moore the Elder nurdled the ball around for an unbeaten 14 and the innings closed at 131 for 8.

This proved not to be enough as Waltham St Lawrence won by 7 wickets. Hussain (not necessarily a relation, but batted as if he could have been) played a classy innings of 62 not out - dropping him twice was not wise, nor fair on all the quicker bowlers who worked hard with little luck.

Moore the Younger richly deserved his pint of the amber nectar as compensation for the stick he got all afternoon (none of it warranted) from your correspondent.
