Report by Mr Ed
After last weeks splendid display against Mortimer West End, this was a very disappointing effort against Ibis Mapledurham and we can consider ourselves fortunate to escape with a losing draw.
On considerably the fastest pitch we've played on this year, a couple of early chances were put down and we never really recovered from these early setbacks. The previous week we had fielded superbly, this week we were truly dreadful. It was by some considerable margin the worst fielding display by any side which I have seen represent Theale & Tilehurst. One can only hope that we collectively had a bad day and that we can put this performance behind us for the rest of the season.
Ibis Mapledurham were able to capitalise on our nightmarish display, and rattled up 232 for the loss of only five wickets. Opener Thomas scoring ninety and Jones getting an unbeaten 53 on the back of some aggressive running.
On a good wicket such a total was still chaseable, and when James Codd hit the first ball of our reply to the boundary it seemed that anything could be possible. However, our top order yet again failed to click. A couple of wickets were lost early on to the swinging ball, and Steve Pyke being needlessly run out did not help our situation. A useful fifth wicket partnership of 49 between Andy Johnson, who went on to make forty-seven and Mark Mason seemed to be steering us towards safety. A flurry of wickets however to some extraordinary shots bearing in mind the match situation plunged us into deep trouble at 134-9 with ten overs to go. Finally we at last played some intelligent cricket. Nigel Halliday and Phil Jenkins were able to play out the remainder of the innings with few alarms and enabled us to secure us a scarcely deserved draw.
It was a poor performance and the best thing that can be said about it, was at least we didn't lose. Indeed later in the evening, T&T enjoyed a double success, coming first & second in the social club quiz. Ho hum.
