Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Thatcham 2nd June 2001

BACK

Report by PK

Saturday comes - after a week of fantastic weather, I arose to a Saturday morning full of black and grey clouds (typical).

The bad vibes I was getting were further increased when at just before mid-day the 1st XI skipper called to pinch one of my players - great start - one hour to go and a man short.

After making quite a lot of phone calls I managed to get someone to play - although it has to be said the person never turned up to the ground and we were a man short anyway.

Finally arriving at the Thatcham ground we all proceeded to get ready for the game and at 10 mins to the off - guess what - thats right - it started to rain !!

We finally got underway at 2.20pm with yours truly winning the toss and putting the home team in.

The initial overs went very well with Osman and Dermot both bowling well and keeping the runs down. After Osmans initial spell of 6 overs, yours truly came on and the run rate promptly increased. needless to say I soon came off again after only four overs which presented with a first appearance for Stuart Holmes this season.

Stuart bowled extremely well for 13 solid overs taking 5 - 50 (this means that Stuart's last 3 appearances for the 2XI have all resulted in him getting 5 'fers).

At the other end, another debutant, Lee Smith bowled very well managing a respectable 11 overs with 2-37. Its nice to see that we as a club are starting get some considerable depth to our bowling now.

Thatcham finished on 138 for 8 - mostly due to some cavalier batting from the left handed opener Glinos who more than once rode his luck to make a good 41.

Our reply faltered at the start losing Kumar for 7 - being caught at square leg off the first really aggressive shot he had played. This brought in Alan Pyke who along with Derek managed to consolidate and put some runs on the board. Derek finally went for 17 whilst Alan was looking good until bowled for 30. Dave Cumming for once failed with the bat and it was now the pinching of one of my batsman would begin to tell. Alex was next in and with Osman began to get us back into the game, at one stage when we were looking down and out, hitting 24 from 2 overs. The run rate was hovering between 4 and 5.5 mostly - and was definately on. Yours truly was next in at the demise of Osman, and showed once again a dismal performance with the bat - I really am struggling to even hit the damned ball these days - before falling for only 3 and wasting some valuable dot balls.

We finally lost our last wicket on the penultimate ball of the 44th over and were an agonizing 3 runs short of victory - (oh for those lost singles) and ended 136 all out.

It just goes to show the importance of having a full team - one more body in the field would of made all the difference - and would have certainly turned defeat into a victory.
