Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Woodley 9th June 2001

This was a game that Theale & Tilehurst desperately needed to win to push towards the top half of the division.

The weather looked as though it may well spoil the game all together. James Codd won toss and elected to bat on a nice batting track. The game was the first of the season for T&T's Clyde Cutting.

The start was good with James Codd racing to 20 out of 28 before being bowled by Ben Sheffield. This brought to the crease the waif-like Dennis Robertson who was eager to impress in front of his boss and half of his football team. Three bowls later the same man was heading back to the pavilion. He hit a thick edge to first slip (His Boss) who caught Robertson without the use of his hands in the most delicate of places.

The ball was beginning to swing a lot and T & T were finding it hard to settle. With the loss of two more wickets Theale were starting to hope for rain. Martin Pyke decided to take the initiative. Martin & Mo Iqbal pushed Theale into a comfortable position where Theale still had the opportunity to post a very good score.

The highlights were the tremendous partnership of 78 from Martin Pyke & Mo Iqbal, and the 96 from Martin Pyke who was out in the last over trying to get his ton.

On a good batting track Woodley shut up shop early. Trevor Wright made a good 65 out of Woodley's 181. But the home side never seemed as though they were interested in chasing Theale's target of 237 and the majority of the points were rightfully T & T's thanks to Martin Pyke's 96 & Brian Cooper's 5- 45.
