Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs BCS 17th June 2001

Following the amount of rain that had fallen in the previous 48 hours we were lucky to play this game at all. The pitch was perfectly playable, however, and obviously impressed the BCS captain who on winning the toss took the somewhat surprising decision to bat first.

With a new ball in their hands and helpful seam bowling conditions the experienced Williams and the developing Mahmood weren't going to waste this opportunity of getting on top on the usually flat Theale pitch. At 18-4 the BCS captain, who had tried to illustrate what a good decision he had made by opening the batting, might have been having second thoughts. The early highlights were a catch by Mike 'put him out he's on fire' Orriss and a ball that deserved a whole fruit salad from Mahmood to dismiss the dangerous Watts caught behind. Dixon, however, managed to keep the scoreboard moving through a combination of strong hitting and good fortune, and was ably supported by the reliable, at least agaainst T&T, Drain.

After some tight bowling from Puri who was unlucky not to take a wicket and as the pitch dried out the skipper turned to his spin twins of Cooper and Coldman. Cooper managed three wickets again by fooling batsmen with his heavily disguised full toss and Coldman overcame some early rustiness to take his first wickets for the club.

A target of 121 was no formality however on a still helpful bowling pitch and against a dangerous opening attack of Goodenough and Barnes. Goodenough worked up a good pace early on to dismiss both openers but a partnership of 50 between Dennis 'why can't every day be Sunday' Robertson and Mark Mason settled the nerves. A further promising performance by Coldman with the bat ensured that a late flurry of wickets by Goodenough in his second spell didn't stop Theale and Tilehurst completing a good victory over a strong opposition.
