Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Peppard 23rd June 2001

Sometimes you just come up against people who on the day can do no wrong.

On a warm day and a pitch where it was going to be difficult to take wickets what to do first wasn't an easy decision. Peppard won the toss and put us in but batting first shouldn't have been a disadvantage. At 103 without loss, although Clyde Cutting had retired hurt, T&T were well placed to put 230-250 on the board and make chasing a difficult job. James Codd batted well for his 72 but unfortunately no other batsmen was able to go and play a second big innings that would have made the total needed. Dennis Robertson and Martyn Pyke both got started but when they were out in quick succession the scoring rate slowed. Good bowling by Austin and Asquith during the last 15 overs also slowed the rate and what should have been 230 or more only ended up being 203.

Having been on the wrong end of Hugh Asquith in the home game last year we knew it was important to get him early. As it was he made a chanceless 108 before being caught and bowled near the end by Stuart Holmes, who along with Chris Lemm had been the pick of the bowlers. The power of Asquith's straight hitting was quite phenomenal, more than one ball was lost without anyone bothering to try and look for it. Asquith was well supported by Searby in an opening partnership of 194 that saw Peppard to victory with five overs to spare. Searby did give one difficult chance early on off Iqbal before he was the first to reach fifty after which he played a supporting role to the increasingly belligerent Asquith.

On the form of their two openers on Saturday Peppard will be one of the teams battling for promotion at the end of the season.
