Report by Dopey
Well for the majority of the team it was the first game of the season. On paper it looked as though Theale had an under strength side where as Stratfield had quite a few first teamers in to bolster the side that was beaten in the fixture last year.
Stratfield won the toss and elected to field. Nigel Halliday the new 2nd eleven skipper chose to open with Dennis Robertson and Mark Mason. The duo were apprehensive after all the rain of the day before. But after the first couple of overs the pair had got into their stride and by the end of the eighth over, the score was 40 for no loss. The pitch was playing perfectly, no shooters or balls spitting up off a length.
The first wicket fell with Mark Mason attempting to hook a short waist high ball skywards only to be caught by the bowler. This brought in the suntanned Mike Toyer to brighten the day up. Soon Robertson was to follow Mr Mason. Geoff Triner bowled a loose delivery which drifted down leg side. Dennis tried to guide it down to fine leg but only gloved it behind to the wicky. He later discovered that both the wicketkeeper and umpire both thought it had glanced his thigh on the way through and were impressed with the pseudo scotsman’s sportsmanship. Miike Toyer and Nigel Halliday batted intelligently in a partnership of 35 before they both bowled by Mison and Stancliffe respectively. This brought about a display of batting that you will not see again. Dave Withington and Pete Moore were at the crease with the score 83 for 4. Both players batted well and moved the score onto 117 before Dave was bowled by M Brewer. With everybody chipping in at the end and a cavalier innings from Pete Moore the Theale innings ended with them on 155 all out.
When Stratfield opened their innings it looked as the skies would open at any second but apart from a light shower the weather stay dry. Theale opened the bowling with Nigel Halliday and (Uncle Albert himself) Bob Williams. They used the conditions superbly and had Stratfield in all sorts of bother. By the time Mark Mason began to bowl the score was 18 for 7 with Theale having bowled 18 overs. Stratfield’s only savior from a comical score was Geoff Patterson who went onto score 72 out of the 87 Stratfield got. Nigel Halliday and Bob Williams both ended up with 4 wickets with Mark Mason picking the other 2.
The reporter’s man of the match in a team where everybody played a important part has to be Peter Moore. 20 runs including 2 glorious 4’s and only conceding 1 bye when keeping. Alex Moore must be worried that his father may take the 2nd team gloves for the impending home game against Englefield 2nd’s. All in all it must have been a pleasing result for the new 2nd eleven skipper.
