Theale & Tilehurst 1st vs Mortimer West End 3rd May 2003

Report by Fingers

Despite now playing in division one the T&T first eleven found itself away at Mortimer West End on the first day of the league season for the third year running.  The previous two games had both been very tight and had ended with a win apiece.  This one proved not to be so close.

With the rain that there had been in the week the pitch was very wet and on winning the toss T&T had no hesitation in choosing to field first.  Initially things went to plan with MWE struggling to 16-3 off 11 overs.  The dismissals typical early season ones caught at mid on and mid off and one a self proclaimed great catch by Jamil who woke up just in time to dive forward and get one had underneath the ball.

However, dropped catches were to prove costly for T&T.  John Bray was dropped early on at slip and then it was he and Paul Belcher who steadied the innings and took the score on to 72.  The dismissal of Bray brought Gillon to the crease who trusted to his luck, a good eye and some strong hitting to start taking the game away from T&T.  The dismissal of Belcher and Steve Honour in quick succession potentially opened up one end but Towey was dropped behind early on in his innings and he and Gillon put on 66 in quick time to finally take the total to 182 all out.

In reality this was 40-50 over par and was going to be difficult to chase.  The early dismissal of Jamil certainly didn't help and we needed some decent partnerships to get close.  Unfortunately only two partnerships got past 30 and those only just, both of these featured James who looked to most comfortable of the top order batsman.  The T&T lower order were left to bat the game out for a draw which they managed with relative comfort, Neill Halliday dismissed off the final ball of the innings searching for an extra batting point.

So, a disappointing start to the season and we need to pick up quickly to make sure that we don't get left behind.
