Theale & Tilehurst ‘B’ vs Hawley 10th May 2003

Following a losing draw in the first game it was important for T&T to come out of this game with a positive result. On a good looking batting track T&T wanted to bat first and did but only after being put in by Hawley. The initial exchanges were fairly even with T&T 54-2 in the 16th over when Andy Crofts walked to the crease. The first ball he received was just short of a length outside off stump and he easily leant back and drove it through cover point for four. Now, classy shots early in his innings can often be a false dawn but on this occasion it was anything but. There can surely be no destructive (literally as it was to prove later) batsman in the club than Andy when he gets going. Stats time: Andy brought up his 50 off 31 balls, his 100 off 56 balls and his 146 came off 77 balls. The innings included 16 fours and 5 sixes, one of which went straight through the unfortunate James' back windscreen. The only cricketing blemish on the innings was the need for both Micky and Andy Johnson to sacrifice themselves as the result of some over optimistic calling. With 243 on the board T&T declared after 41 overs to give extra time to try and bowl Hawley out. However, Hawley got off to a quick start scoring 33 in the first four overs. However, the dismissal of Hargreaves acted as a brake and Hawley never seriously threatened to get close to the T&T total. Mind you, T&T never threatened to bowl out Hawley either. So, a winning draw which counts as a good result but it was disappointing not to be able to bowl out Hawley for the win.
