Theale & Tilehurst 2nd vs Mortimer West End 10th May 2003

Report by Chef

The day before the game I found out that Neill was playing for me but all he could do is stand and make up the numbers.  He had sustained the most bizarre injury known to man.  He is renowned for his injuries but this one really is a cut above the rest.  He injured himself drying his hair!  Now if you've seen Doc this must be a difficult feat.  He is not exactly Curtis Stigers or Billy Ray Sirus.  He could have adequately dried his hair had his wife blew on it through a straw for 12 seconds.  Still this turned out to be a blessing.

As we met up at Theale Doc said "actually skip it's loosened up a bit, I might be able to bowl, no pace but I should be able to get it down there and I might be able to bat"  Bonus I thought..

When we met up at Mortimer WE Doc said, "actually skip, it's loosened up quite a bit, I might be able to bowl properly and I can certainly bat".

In the vague hope that Doc might have fully recovered and be available to bowl later on, I won the toss and decided to bat first.  Eddie and Dennis got us off to a good start with Rags and Mike continuing the good work.  Rags hitting a big 6 and managed to make 42 before being dismissed.  For a very brief spell the pitch got nasty, which happened to coincide with my arrival at the crease and subsequent 0.  The pitch promptly died back down to tame as Imran and the now semi revived Doc putting on 28 & 22 not out respectively.  Neill with a lovely 6 over extra cover.  T&T ended up on a good total of 210 for 7.

At tea Mortimer asked if one of their batsmen could have a runner as he injured himself bowling.  He just so happened to be the person who got 50 against our 1sts the week before and also happened to injure himself in that game.  I politely agreed.

After Tea Doc said "actually skipper I feel fine now and can bowl at full pace".  This was proved as Neill took the openers stump out the ground.  The guy who was injured then game in, with his runner.  It had to be said I wasn't expecting him to come in that early, seemed a little unfair to me.  I guess had he been allowed to he would have opened with a runner but there we go.  So Doc seeing that this guy had come to the crease so early, knowing how he had batted last week and that he shouldn't have got near 50 was somewhat enraged.  This was only going to have one result and that was Gillon back off to the pavilion for 0.

Having had no luck in bowling I had to come off taking just the one wicket and being 2 wickets behind Neill (no rivalry here!).  Nayab came on to bowl and bowled very tidily and took two wickets, one breaking a big partnership and getting Stevens on 36.

Rags bowled generously (unlike him) and Simon bowled well but unable to get a break through.  They were up with the run rate but had lost a few wickets so we were still able to keep an attacking field.  I made another change and brought myself on from the other end.  I managed to get a wicket in the first over, Neill followed up with another shortly after.  I was 4-2 down with only two wickets to go.  I then managed to pull a muscle in my side which turned out to be very useful.  The strain started making me bowl straight and I managed finished off the last two batsmen, with slow straight balls.  So we ended up on 4 each, however all mine were clean bowled as opposed to the two played on's that Neill had, so nyer nyer.

It was one of those days, unless your first name began with N you weren't going to take a wicket.

We had got the big 30 points which went some way to recovering the poor defeat last week.  Thanks go to Brian for leaving me with someone as injured as Neill.  As it happens the firsts would have one their game had Neill played for them.   Ooops!
