Theale & Tilehurst vs Purley 11th May 2003

This was the first Millennium League fixture of the season and in each of the last two seasons it had proved decisive in terms of winning the league for Purley.  The expectation was again that the game would prove to be a close affair.  However, the early exchanges went very much in favour of Theale and Tilehurst.  Mo Iqbal bowled Derbyshire and in the same over the young Allen was run out by Osman Mahmood.  It should be stressed he wasn't attempting a run but was standing outside his ground and watched intently as Osman rolled the ball to wicket-keeper Robertson who then removed the bails, he still seemed to be surprised to be given out. Further wickets fell quickly to leave Purley at a perilous 31-6 which could have become worse had Holman been caught when he offered a chance before he had established himself.  However, this was to be a game dominated by one man.  Batting at no.7 Andy Wheeler started slowly but a partnership was formed with Holman which took the score through to three figures.  Towards the end of his innings Wheeler started opening out with some powerful shots to see the Purley total through to 153-8, much more than they could have hoped for earlier in the innings. However, 153 should have been within reach and Edward Choules and Jamil got the innings off to a very good start to leave the score at 55-0 after ten overs.  It was at this point that Andy Wheeler re-entered the fray to take the important wickets of Choules and Robertson in his first over.  He finished with 5-25 taking the top five batsman in the order as his scalps. This collapse continued until with the score on 123-9 the game looked lost.  Led by Osman Mahmood who scored a very accomplished 30no there was a brief revival by T&T and when the score reached 139 hopes were starting to be revived.  It was not to be alas and again Purley leave themselves strongly placed to go on and win the Millennium League.
