Theale & Tilehurst vs Stratfield Turgis 7th June 2003

A win at last and we couldn't have afforded to wait any longer before achieving it. Put in to bat on a damp pitch following heavy overnight rain Theale and Tilehurst struggled early on against the fine opening bowling of Shaun Spence and Steve Ayers. Scoring was slow but the first wicket didn't fall until the 10th over when Micky Mehta got a leading edge to be caught and bowled by Ayers. Spence, who was to bowl 15 overs of aggressive fast bowling straight off, got James Codd bowled in the next over and 25-2 was a precarious position. Mohammed Jamil and Andy Crofts steadied the ship seeing the score through to 66 but the introduction of captain Steve Clarke in to the attack soon accounted for Crofts. In the last couple of matches the fall of the 3rd wicket has triggered a collapse but this time whilst the batting didn't excel it did at least avoid disaster. The main reason T&T managed to make the score up to 160 was a very mature 33no from Chris Lemm who showed his more experienced team mates the virtues of patience and a straight bat. A vigorous 18 from Doc Halliday helped inject some late impetus and achieve what was probably a par score for the pitch. The opening partnership for Stratfield between Andy Headford and Steve Clarke looked to be setting a good platform for them. 46 runs on the board and the openers seen off must have given them confidence. However, it was now that a bit of luck went T&T's way, Headford inside edged a drive off Lemm in to his stumps and Danny Spence was taken superbly one handed down the leg side by Phil Jenkins off Jamil. 71-2 still wasn't a bad position but Stratfield were starting to get behind the rate. A double bowling change did the trick for T&T with both Andy Johnson and Brian Cooper taking wickets in their first overs. 71-4 and panic seemed to set in as the Stratfield batsman played some injudicious shots, mainly to the benefit of Cooper, to subside from 71-2 to 94-9. This was a collapse of T&T proportions. It was left to Jamil to come back and bowl last man Micky Brewer to seal victory with 15 balls to spare.
