Theale & Tilehurst vs Stratfield Turgis 9th August 2003

Report by Fingers

The season of two halves continues.  We did as much wrong in this game as we'd done right at Goring earlier in the season, the difference being we won this time and lost at Goring. On a unbelievably hot afternoon and on a pitch that didn't look like it would last the duration of the game the only sensible option seemed to be to bat first.  However, I was very pleased to lose the toss and opposition skipper Steve Clarke looked very unsure on what to do, finally inviting us to bat. At 47-0 off seven overs the decision seemed to have backfired but things were about to change.  James got one that stopped in the pitch, bounced a bit extra and took the shoulder of the bat to slip.  Worse was to follow as Jamil, Andy Crofts and Mike Toyer became a Steve Ayers hat-trick to leave us at 62-4.  Dennis Robertson and Andy Johnson briefly arrested the decline but wickets started falling again to leave T&T 117 all out in 30 overs. This looked to be an inadequate total, even given the vagaries of the pitch, and having been bowled out in less than 32 overs we had to take the field before tea for half an hour.  Stratfield were understandably reluctant to have their innings split but the view of the T&T side was that it would give us our best chance of victory.  Against the old ball Steve Clarke seemed to be determined to take out his frustration on being made to bat for half an hour on his opposite number, to such effect that after three overs the plan was changed and the new ball taken.  Even this was to no immediate effect as Stratfield took tea at 39-0 off 8 overs. However, the break for tea had the desired effect with Clarke going in the first over after tea bowled by Neill Halliday.  Headford soon followed to a superb Doc yorker.  At 82-3 though and with the dangerous Shaun Spence still at the crease Stratfield had to remain favourites.  The run out of Sandland gave T&T renewed hope and the pace of Chris Lemm and Mohammed Jamil was threatening to be too much for the tail. With 10 needed for victory Spence looked to play a big shot against Jamil and was clean bowled to give T&T the narrowest of victories. This victory means that in the second half of the season we have had 3 wins, two winning draws and a match abandoned when in a strong position.  Great form that we want to keep going until the end of the season.
