Theale & Tilehurst vs Crowthorne 10th August 2003

On a day that was even hotter than it had been on Saturday T&T lost the toss and were condemned to take the field. On a used wicket movement seemed likely and so it proved as Bob Williams nipped one back off the seam to bowl Hill through the gate in the third over. However, Attree had already shown his intent hitting two boundaries in Rag's first over. Crowthorne continued to move the score along quickly, mainly due to Attree, until what proved to be a very controversial moment. Before he had scored many Sherwin quite clearly gloved an attempted reverse sweep straight up in the air and in to the safe hands of Alex Moore. Relief and celebration were shortlived as it became apparent that the batsman wasn't walking and the umpire wasn't going to give him out. The unfortunate thing is that what T&T will remember from the game about Crowthorne is this act by Sherwin (and his constant unsportsmanlike behaviour and mouth) rather than the superb innings played by Attree at the other end. It looked like luck was well and truly out for T&T as on an afternoon when we were already short of bowlers Bob was unable to complete his spell due to an arm injury. This brought James out of his self proclaimed bowling retirement and he was probably the pick of the bowlers on the day. Chasing 284 to win was always an unlikely proposition but Rog and Alex gave the T&T reply a good solid start. This proved to be an excellent platform for David Withington to score his 4th half century of the season and register his personal highest score. The innings was full of excellent strokes and good timing and with time running out David was bowled on the drive ten short of what would have been his maiden hundred. As it was 230-8 represented a good response after an extremely hot afternoon in the field.
