Theale & Tilehurst vs Berks County Sports 16th August 2003

The 1st XI run of wins continues and the double done over us in the first half of the season by BCS is fully avenged.

BCS skipper Pete Drain won the toss and quickly elected to bat on what was a very dry Theale pitch but one that looked like it would be good for some runs.  BCS lost two early wickets, one apiece to Doc and Icky, both caught by the debutante Phil Stephens in the gully.  However, Joe Dixon (46) and Andy Watts (53) came together and took the BCS innings to 119-2 off 30 overs.  From this point they must have been confident of reaching 240 and potentially putting the game out of reach.  However, the combined spin attack of Fingers and Crofty put the brake on and wickets started to fall, Watts first top edging a sweep to deep square leg and then Dixon running himself out thinking that Doc had missed the ball at extra cover when in fact he had it safely in his hands.

As it was it required some strong late hitting by Paul Heslop to get the BCS score up to 197-8.  The T&T view at tea was mixed, some thinking the total was 30 runs under par and others thinking it was a very defendable total.

James and Jamil got the T&T innings off to a quick start putting on 81 for the first wicket as the BCS spinners bowling with the old ball dropped too short.  The first wicket to fall was Jamil, who in the course of his innings had gone through 500 league runs in a season for the 2nd consecutive year, to a spectacular catch by Dixon running back at long off.  James and Micky both fell as well to the new ball to leave T&T at 104-3.  This was potentially a long way still to go but Crofty, who was riding his luck having been dropped first ball, and Phil came together in an unbroken partnership of 99 to see T&T to a maximum 30 point haul with few alarms.  Crofty finishing the match with a six in to the car park.

With Stratfield Turgis and Mortimer West End both losing this makes the whole of Division 1 very tight.  With two games left we could finish practically anywhere in the table so all is still to play for.
