Theale & Tilehurst vs BCS 16th August 2003

Report by Chef

Well this was a match that warranted a report.  Things started out quite well when in the first over I took the openers stump out the ground (a first for me I might add).  Things kind of went down hill from there.   At 56 off 10, we weren't exactly stemming the run rate.  Both Os and I took a bit of a pounding.  Then came Nayab with a wicket in his second over, a lovely in-swinging yorker.  However things didn't improve much after that.  It wasn't until the 30th over when the next wicket went, Rags bowling Dixon, having had him in a reasonable amount of trouble with his round the wicket in swing.  Although note must be made of the slowest slower ball I have seen since Dave Harvey bowled on club day.

The star of the bowling was Sri.  Having bowled 1 over of seam up against Crowthorne I asked him to bowl off breaks.  Well this seemed to go down well.  With his first over being a little eratic but only going for 2, he then bowled Williams who was on 65, when he played on.  Then later got the scalp of Goodenough finishing on 9 overs, the only maiden of the innings, 31 runs and two wickets.  A late run for the bowling award aswell as the batting award.

I managed to pick up another wicket in-between their boundaries.  BCS finishing with 230 for 6.  However knowing their bowling this was not out of our grasp.  The other bonus is they had 10 men.

Well things went off at a steady pace with 20 overs gone we were on 70 for no loss.  The run rate was now 6.4 but no wickets down.  Well Ed and Eddie decided to spead up the run rate, with overs of 13,8 and 12 runs.  We were 160 in 32 overs before the first wicket of Eddie Ellis (85) was dismissed, a record partnership for the 2nds and just a few short of the club record.  Still needing 5.4 an over, Ed Choules then followed and was dismissed for 56.  The end of two exceptional innings.

We needed 58 off 10, two new batsmen in Sri and Osman.  What happened next could only be described as a whirlwind partnership.  The next 5.2 overs went for 11,11,12,11,7,8 runs.  Sri reaching his 54 in just 30 balls.  The boys had lead us to victory with 4.4 overs to go.  A sound thrashing was delivered, nice retribution for earlier in the year.
