Theale & Tilehurst vs Ibis & Mapledurham 23rd August 2003

This was going to be the test of how far the T&T side had progressed in the second half of the season as we played the already champions Ibis. With a good chase behind us last week on winning the toss we decided to field first and chase again. The early wicket of Eliyas caught at extra cover gave the team a boost as did the dismissal of Ali caught at slip by Phil, or buckets as he is likely to be called soon. The decision had been taken before the innings started to ask Chris to have a burst early on and save the vastly more experienced Doc to either follow up with another burst or start his career as a medium paced trundler bowling containing spells in the middle of the innings. We went for the latter with Doc but he still managed to show that his fast bowler's mentality is in tact. When Bobb showed disappointment at being given out lbw Doc decided that it would be a good idea to point out aggressively to someone about a foot taller than him that he should "get off". The Ibis batsman continued to play their shots but the T&T bowlers continued to come back with good replies. None better than Jimmy Hill's when having been hit for six straight back over his head the ball before he uprooted Browne's off stump with a perfect yorker. As it was Ibis lost their last three wickets for one run as the spin of Fingers and Crofty took hold. On a good pitch 148 looked too few but Ibis have some good bowlers and it wasn't a foregone conclusion that we would chase them down. However, James and Jimmy Hill got us off to a good start again with a partnership of 61 inside 13 overs. When both went inside five balls there was still a lot of work to do but Micky and Crofty both played faultlessly in an unbroken partnership of 88 to see T&T home with the best part of 25 overs to spare.
