Theale & Tilehurst vs Purley 30th August 2003

The 1st XI wasn't quite able to keep its winning run going to the end of the season as they had a losing draw against the other form team in the division, Purley. On winning the toss T&T elected to bowl first deciding that this was the best way of potentially getting 30 points and keeping any outside chances of promotion alive. However, having failed to take a wicket against Purley in the first game between the two sides the early exchanges suggested T&T were going to have to work very hard if they wanted any this time either. Glen Goudie and Paul Reber put on 75 for the first wicket before Goudie edged one behind to the 'keeper off Doc. However, the young pairing of Reber and Patrick Allen continued to bat well, running between the wickets hard and taking the score to 145. Reber went on to score a very fine 102 and was only dismissed off the last ball of the innings as a flurry of late wickets saw the score to 217-7. The flurry of late wickets for Jamil left him with 24 league wickets at an average of under 17 which was enough to pip Icky for the 1st XI bowling award. Purley opted to start with the old ball but initially with little effect as James and Jamil put on 69 for the first wicket. It was only with the introduction of Bentley in to the attack that things changed as he dismissed both James and Jamil in consecutive overs. Jamil's 44 meant that he ended the league season with 597 runs at an average of over 37 to just pip Crofty for the 1st XI batting award. With the fall of the 2nd wicket Purley took the new ball but Micky and Phil came together in a partnership of 89 which took T&T to 161-2 in the 32nd over. From this position T&T should have won the game but runs on the board are always twice as hard to get batting second. When Phil was dismissed Dennis soon followed but Micky and Chris steadied the innings to leave T&T needing 32 to win off 8 overs with six wickets in hand. Again from this position T&T should have closed out the match but going in to the last over seven were still needed with the last pair at the crease. With all four results still possible an excellent game ended as a draw.
