Theale & Tilehurst vs Eversley 13th September 2003

Report by Fingers

On a perfect September day a strong, certainly in batting, T&T side travelled to Eversley.  On a good looking batting surface both teams were keen to bat first and the coin came down in Eversley's favour. Whenever you see a cricketer taking the field in black trainers there is a perception that they are unlikely to be either the opposition's main player or indeed any good.  Eversley must have been surprised, therefore, to see the black trainer wearing Doc taking the new ball.  Both Doc and Os made the openers work hard but apart from a difficult chance going down at slip the Eversley openers made good, albeit slow progress. As it was the first wicket didn't fall until Beer and Mission had put on 104 but this had taken the best part of 30 overs.  AJ soon took his second wicket to have taken both openers before another good partnership formed between Charles and Hughes.  A range of bowlers were tried and whilst runs never came freely wickets weren't coming either.  It was only with the introduction of Jamil, the best sixth change bowler in the club, that wickets started to fall with any regularity. Eversley eventually reached 208-5 but it had taken them 50 overs to get there. The T&T reply got off to a flying start and it was to continue to soar away.  Eversley must have been relieved to have dismissed the President with the score on 47 after seven overs and Baker, the successful bowler, informed his colleagues that he had now found his rhythm.  What they hadn't banked on was Jamil in a particularly exuberant mood.  After three balls Os doing the scoring reckoned it might be worth counting the balls Jamil faced, this means I can tell you that his fifty came off 23 balls and at one point it looked like it was going to be quicker.  Whilst all this was going on James continued on his merry way to a fine 80 and his 49th fifty for the club. The dismissal of Jamil and Crofty coming in to bat was unlikely to be much relief for the Eversley bowlers and so it proved, after 22 overs the score had been taken to 188-2.  James and Crofty were both caught at long on allowing AJ to show them how it should be done finishing the game with a huge six straight over the aforementioned long on.
