Theale & Tilehurst vs Embrook 14th September 2003

On arrival at the ground the first thing that became apparent was some vandalism on the pitch just on a length when bowling from the School End. Time for a quick repair job and a prayer that it would hold for the duration of the game.

James won the toss and, unsurprisingly considering his form of the previous day, elected to bat. Phipps, opening the bowling from the Englefield Road End, charged in and the first ball was just short of a length, nipped back of the seam and took James in the ribs. It looked like it was going to be something of a contest, ten balls later the first over finally finished. The first ball proved to be something of a false dawn and James and Rog took to the E&B bowling with a vengeance, the bowlers being very careful not to land the ball on the repaired area on a good line and length.

The boundary continued to be found on a regular basis as the score went past fifty. On reaching his own personal fifty James reached the significant land mark of having passed fifty on fifty occasions for T&T, he was to make it the sixth time he had reached three figures later on. The scoring continued freely and the 100 partnership was brought up. Those watching were very much enjoying the display bar two people who were starting to get nervous, Dennis and Alex's club record partnership of 185 was starting to look in danger.

Rog went to his own 50 and the score passed 150, the nerves of Dennis and Alex increasing. However, the first record broken was the 1st wicket partnership previously held by Ed and Jamil at 175. The score reached 185 to equal the record and as if to keep Alex and Dennis hoping the record was finally broken with a confused piece of running for a single. James obviously had as one of his heroes Sergei Bubka because he decided beating the record by one run was enough and hit the next ball to point to be dismissed.

Alex and the very tired Rog, for a personal best of 80, soon followed to leave Mike and Dennis in particular to run the fielding side ragged in the last few overs. The innings finally closed on a club record 299-3 off forty overs.

The E&B shop was not so much shut as never opened in reply. Clacy played very well for his fifty before clipping a full toss straight to backward square leg as the pitch continued to play blamelessly and skipper Mole was obviously determined not to lose. The bowling remained tight but only half chances could be created.

The unfortunate incident of note in the second innings of the game was a ball being top edged into Alex's mouth whilst standing up to the stumps for the loss of a couple of teeth. Our best wishes go to him for a speedy recovery and we hope to see him back on the field again soon.
