Theale & Tilehurst vs Warfield 21st September 2003

Report by Fingers

Having recently played in some very high scoring matches on some very flat batting pitches this game was something of a contrast.  The look of the pitch though didn't stop James deciding to bat first on winning the toss.

After a couple of trade mark boundaries James was caught behind off the lively Wells as the pitch started to show some of its tricks.  A couple of balls sailed well over Ed's head before another one popped on him, took the shoulder of the bat and looped up to slip.  No-one had told Mike though that the pitch was looking difficult to bat on, although he had taken the rare precaution of batting in a helmet, as he dominated the early scoring with some typically well timed boundaries. There were ten fours in his 43 and he was denied another when a fiercely struck pull hit the unfortunate Bob umpiring at square leg.  However, just as he was threatening to take the game away from Warfield Mike got one that stayed low and got through his defence to bowl him.

81-6 was a precarious position and Osman and Fingers decided caution and accumulation were the order of the day.  Slowly they built a partnership of 44 before the partnership finally ended with Os being run out.  Imran struck some late boundaries to take the score through to 144-8 off only 39 overs but at tea it was felt that this was a competitive total.

Philpott got the Warfield innings off to a lively start with some self confessed agricultural strokes.  However, when Warfield lost their first two wickets in two balls T&T were back in the game with Farouk in particular bowling well and unfortunate not to have more wickets.

What was already starting to prove very costly though was the T&T fielding.  It was almost as if everyone had been dared to complete a piece of fielding in the style of someone who couldn't stop a pig in a passage, at least six times balls went through fielders legs and on for four.  To add to this three catches were also put down.

One of the chief beneficiaries of this was Moss who after a slow start to his innings opened up and played some very powerful shots.  Despite wickets falling at the other end Moss kept his nerve and it was fitting that he should strike the winning runs to give Warfield a win by 4 wickets with two overs to spare.
