Theale & Tilehurst vs Bedlow 27th September 2003

The final Saturday game of the season and the relatively long trip to Bledlow and a man short due to an unfortunate late drop out. With a team that looked very strong in batting and a bit thin in bowling the decision was taken to bat first and hopefully enjoy watching us run up a large total and create some score board pressure. It seems that a full season of cricket has finally brought El Presidente up to match fitness and off the first ball of the innings his trademark late cut produced a three! This was to pre-empt a frantic start to the innings with the score 27-2 off five overs, was this going to be one of those fabled strong batting orders on paper that never produced? When Phil drove the ball straight to cover when he was on eight things looked bleak but fortunately the catch went down. After a slow start Phil was to make Bledlow pay for their error as boundary after boundary was reeled off, the most memorable being a checked drive that sailed back over the bowler's head for six. In all there were 25 fours and 2 sixes in his innings of 136 which lasted 138 balls and was a personal best. It wasn't a one man show though as much of this innings was part of a partnership of 156 for the third wicket with James. This beating the existing record third wicket partnership for the club held by Chris Legg and Vic Hayter of 152 for the 3rds against West Drayton earlier in the season. The partnership was to end in bizarre circumstances though when James played a leg glance which he thought had gone for four. Having completed one run he was ambling back to the strikers end and doing some gardening on the way when the ball was returned to the 'keeper and the bails removed to deprive James of his fifty. After Micky was unfortunately bowled first ball (thus failing to meet his criteria of a successful away game of a run per mile travelled) there was still time for Phil and Sri to put on 69 in seven overs before Phil was finally dismissed and the innings closed on 252-5. In the absence of a recognised opening bowler Micky was asked to open the bowling with Bob. Walker was soon dismissed and when Fingers took a wicket in his first over to make it 32-2 things looked promising. However, a partnership of 92 between Hinks and Floyd threatened to put Bledlow in a position where they could make a serious assault on the T&T total. Things weren't to be though and when four wickets fell for 7 runs any chance of victory for Bledlow evaporated. In the deteriorating light the game ended as a draw with Bledlow losing their 8th wicket in the final over of the game.
