Theale & Tilehurst vs Farley Hill 28th September 2003

Report by Fingers

The final game of the T&T season and it's an early start at Farley Hill.  On winning the toss James elected to bowl first and there was much speculation on whether someone could take that five-fer and impress the selectors prior to the winter tour squad being announced in NatWest trophy tradition. In the early cold conditions it was the bowlers who were on top.  The first to go was Henry Lee who was opening the batting to mark the end of his fiftieth playing season for Farley Hill, a tremendous achievement.  Bob then weighed in with a couple of wickets to mean that three wickets had fallen with the score on 10.  Clacey and Smith then steadied the ship before three wickets fell with the score on 49.  The game was in danger of being over before lunch but Cox decided to play for time which set the platform for some late fireworks.  The no. 10 McClaren had apparently not made a significant contribution with the bat all season but this was just about to change as he decided it was hit out or get out, 6 fours and 3 sixes later and the innings closed on 163-8 which set the game up nicely.  McClaren and Shaw having put on 65 for the ninth wicket in little more than seven overs. As if to prove that the force really was with him McClaren opened the bowling and took a wicket with the first ball of the innings when one stayed low to get through James' defences and bowl him.  Dennis and Micky opted for consolidation and put on 77 for the second wicket before Dennis was dismissed in the 23rd over trying to open up.  100 had been needed off the last 20 overs and the early overs of the change bowlers, Shaw and Lee, increased the pressure with a run a ball being needed off the last ten overs.  Ed though was starting to find the boundary with some regularity and Micky went through 50 to leave T&T in a strong position.  Then the run out of Micky prompted a collapse of four wickets in four overs and the game was back in the balance.  Enter Imran who opted for the long handle approach (not knowing any other way) and after a few lusty blows the game was won to secure a victorious end to the season.
