Theale & Tilehurst vs Warfield 22nd May 2004

BACK

Report by Fingers

Following on from the double header against Stratfield Turgis last week this was a double header weekend against Warfield with the 1st XI playing away. Warfield are a team on the up having been promoted two seasons on the trot and started this season well with a winning draw at Goring so presumably went in to the match with lots of confidence. T&T won the toss and put Warfield in to bat on a pitch that at first reading looked likely to be low and slow.

Sivapalan and Crichton opened the batting for Warfield and started slowly with the occasional straight six to the very short boundary at one end. It was not until the first over after the drinks interval that the first wicket fell with the score on 80. To the first ball of the over there was a big appeal for a catch at square leg but it was deemed to be a bump ball, however three balls later Crichton chipped AJ to Micky at mid wicket for an undisputed catch.

Micky had been a little late arriving at the ground due to getting hopelessly lost on the way and doing a scenic tour of the Bracknell, Crowthorne and Sandhurst areas. His catch though was part of a fine display of fielding from a man who must now be considered as a specialist mid wicket fielder.

Warfield got their score up to 127-1 and looked like they should go on to a total well in excess of 200. However, Warfield didn't seem to know what they needed or what a decent total was or have any proper batting plan for how they were going to get there. They allowed Fingers and AJ to put something of a brake on the innings and it was only the last two overs of the innings going for 25 that got the total up to 194.

On a pitch that had no real pace or bounce to encourage the bowler and boundaries that were either short or down hill this was a total that was well within reach for a full strength T&T batting line up. There was an early alarm when there was a concerted appeal for caught behind off Jamil but the decision was not out. This seemed to create some bad feeling amongst the Warfield players and with there being a noise those on the boundary seemed to think Jamil may have been lucky to survive. However, it was later confirmed to have been a good decision with the noise being bat on pad and the ball having passed well above the gloves.

James was the first to go. Towards the end of his innings James was playing like a man who had a plane to catch and was caught at deep mid-off going for a lofted straight drive too many. He was replaced at the wicket by Andy who did have a plane to catch and after an initial look played as such. During this Jamil carried on his way, initially a little slower than normal but once he went past fifty he opened up to play in the style we have grown accustomed to. Jamil has now scored three fifties and a century in the four innings he has had this season.

96-2 in the 21st over left us well placed but we had collapsed badly last week from an equally strong position. With Jamil going well Micky proved to be the ideal partner as he was happy to play in a supporting role and simply make sure that we didn't lose a third wicket quickly. As it happened T&T accelerated towards our winning target with the final 110 runs only taking 15 overs to get. What made victory even better was finding out that the 2nds and 3rds had won as well to make it a clean sweep of victories for the T&T sides.

The season has started with two wins for the first time since anyone can remember. Next week sees the visit of Peppard who are likely to be one of the stronger teams in the division and will be a stronger test of how well we are playing.
