Theale & Tilehurst vs Little Marlow 23rd May 2004

BACK

Report by Fingers

The game with Little Marlow was probably one of the highlights of the season last year with us ending up one run short chasing 256 (see the archive for last year). Whilst the game didn't quite live up to that this year it was still an excellent game and it was good to win this time.

Little Marlow won the toss and elected to bat. Opening the batting was David Glennerster who had scored runs in the game last year and is undoubtedly a high class player. As he settled in again it looked like we might be in for a long afternoon. Early wickets did fall at the other end with Osman and Bob picking up one apiece but then a strong partnership developed between Glennerster and M Hussain. Steve Collins was making his Sunday debut for the club and was soon introduced in to the attack and it was his bowling, or more particularly Ed's superb reflex catching in the gully, that brought about an end to Glennerster's innings.

Talat Nawaz was also making his debut for the club and he also struck early with what was possibly the slowest delivery ever bowled at Theale. Hussain and Ali both batted well for Little Marlow but a late flurry of wickets, including another fine catch by Ed running in from long on and juggling the ball before catching it at the third attempt, saw them bowled out for 188.

189 to win on a Sunday is quite a stiff run chase but T&T had a strong batting order and so fancied their chances at tea. When Rog went to the final ball of the first over bowled by the impressive Fisher this confidence was dented slightly. However, Micky and Ed steadily built a partnership for the second wicket that put on 83 before it was finally broken in the 21st over.

Micky was playing as fluently as he has so far this season and brought up a fine 50. Tiredness though was starting to set in and this was eventually to prove costly when he was run out. His 70 included 9 fours and 1 six and was scored at a rate of better than a run a ball, taking up only 63 deliveries.

Dennis and Talat then came together for a fifty partnership and looked to be guiding T&T home to a comfortable victory. However, they were both out in quick succession near the end leaving James and Os to put on the final 10 runs needed to secure victory with 9 balls to spare.
