Theale & Tilehurst vs Purley 6th June 2004

BACK

Report by Fingers

Another lost toss and the skipper getting dangerously close to the "useless tosser" title. Unsurprisingly after their strong run chase the week before Purley elected to field and unleash their young quickie Kwesi Roy.

Initially T&T got off to a good start and it was Makepeace who made the first breakthrough when Jamil chased a wide one and chipped a catch to cover. It wasn't until his seventh over that Roy started to make an impact when he had James caught at first slip and with a full length ball bowled Micky. When Mike soon followed, also bowled by Roy, the score was 49-4 and we were in danger of being rolled over.

However, Phil was secure at one end and when Andy joined him there was an initial period of consolidation. Their partnership developed and they were able to move the score along at a greater pace against the change bowling and this was emphasised when Andy swept Masters over the pavilion for a very big six. The delay in retrieving the ball though worked to Purley's advantage as Andy was lbw to the next ball to end a fine partnership of 63.

Phil carried on past 50 and tried to get what he could with the lower order in support. The return of Roy though meant that T&T couldn't give the innings the late burst that was needed and the innings closed at 167 all out.

On a pitch that was a little two paced this total could have been competitive if T&T could make early inroads in to the Purley order. When Allen dismissively pulled the first ball of the third over for six this looked a long way off but Doc finally made a breakthrough with Goudie caught at mid wicket. At 88-3 T&T had the glimpse of a chance but Makepeace continued to play very well, hitting the ball hard and making sure none of the bowlers could settle. He did offer a couple of half chances that T&T needed to take to have any chance but they went to ground and it was fitting that it should be he that hit the winning runs with a large six over wide long on.

Whilst disappointing to lose this was a strong Purley side who on the form shown will be competing at the top end of the table at the business end of the season.
