Theale & Tilehurst vs Crown Wood 6th June 2004

In recent years the fixtures between these two sides have tended to be fairly one sided and this game proved to be no exception. Os was captaining this game and got off to a good start by winning the toss and electing to bat. He also signalled his intent by sending out James and Phil to open the batting.

When the first ball of the game was driven for four by James an inevitable course seemed to have been set, when Phil took the second and fourth overs for 14 and 12 respectively it seemed to have been cast in stone. However, things changed in the fifth over when Crook bowled James with an excellent ball and soon repeated the trick to get rid of Dennis. When Phil was dismissed by Lucas the score was 57-3 in the ninth over and the game was threatening to all happen very rapidly.

What was needed was consolidation and this was provided by Ed and Rog. Rog got off the mark with a six for the second consecutive week and went on to score his first 50 of the season off just 38 balls in a partnership of 93. When Rog was dismissed Ed started to open up and went to his own 50 off 79 balls as he and Stephen Wallace added 69 for the fifth wicket.

It was left to Os and Rags to take advantage of the final overs and see T&T through to a score of 253-6 off 40 overs.

Whilst chasing this target was always going to be a stiff proposition it should have been hard work for T&T to bowl out Crown Wood on what was a very good batting surface. It proved to be anything but. The first wicket went to Bob in the second over of the innings and if he had chosen the skipper could have finished the job with the two openers. With his third wicket Bob passed the landmark of 400 wickets for the club thus joining a very elite band.

However, it seemed unfair with him having travelled thousands of miles to play to give Mikey O a fresh air game. He was thrown the ball and proved that rest can be a cure for many things. His first over was his first ever maiden and following a slightly erratic second over was soon back in to his rhythm for his third. With his fifth ball of the over Mikey took his first wicket for the club and obviously enjoyed it so much that he took another one with his next.

With Mike poised on a hat trick all Dennis had to do was avoid taking a wicket - unfortunately he couldn't manage this thus leaving Mike to wait what is likely to be months and potentially a couple of years before he gets a chance to try and complete his hat trick.

A comfortable win by 190 runs and one of those satisfying occasions, for them individually at least, when one of our batsman scores more than the opposition put together. The advantage of finishing early was to get in the bar and watch England close in on victory against New Zealand.
