Theale & Tilehurst vs Waltham St Lawrence 19th June 2004

BACK

Report by Fingers

Having lost our last two games it was important to get back on track against the team that was top of the table if we were to sustain our interest in promotion.

Waltham skipper Chris England won the toss and elected to field. On a worn pitch that perhaps offered some uneven bounce later on it perhaps wasn't a bad toss to lose. In a new look opening partnership James and Phil started off and apart from an early scare when Phil was dropped at extra cover they looked fairly comfortable. The fifty partnership came up in the tenth over and it was the fifteenth over before the first wicket fell for 62 when James was caught and bowled.

A second good partnership followed as Jamil joined Phil and both went to fifty. Phil's 50 came up off 64 balls and he was finally dismissed by Dave Downes in his first over. Dave bowled an excellent first over having Phil dropped by the wicket keeper before bowling him off stump. Jamil made a welcome return to form scoring his 77 off 63 balls.

At 188-3 off 35 overs we were well placed to make a formidable total but with new batsman at the crease it was important not to try and make too many and end up with too few. Mo was promoted up the order and made a useful 26, including two sixes off one Dave Downes over and the 250 was raised off the final ball of the innings.

This was undoubtedly a good score but Waltham have won most of their games batting second this season. They too got off to a decent start putting 71 on for the first wicket inside 15 overs before Andy took the first of three excellent catches to dismiss the dangerous looking Pickering. Waltham made it through to 117-2 at 25 overs and the game looked like it could be brewing up for a close finish. However, events were about to take a dramatic turn as the last eight wickets fell for 17 runs, the last six for two runs and the last five all on the same score.

The main damage was caused by Jamil who returned figures of 6-39, the best bowling figures in the 1st XI for Theale and Tilehurst. Jamil was well supported by Mo, Osman and Chris as T&T stuck to an all pace attack that was well supported in the field, bar one moment of madness when we managed to concede a 6 wides.

Any win against a top of the table side is a good one but a wining margin of 117 runs represents a convincing victory and our best all round performance of the season to date.
