Theale & Tilehurst vs Goring 3rd July 2004

With a bit of dampness in the pitch on winning the toss T&T had no hesitation in putting Goring in to bat. There was immediate reward when Smith, who has scored a lot of runs for Goring recently, played on to Jamil to the second ball of the game. Armitage soon followed caught behind off Jamil to leave Goring 18-2 and it was left to Grant and Haines to steady the ship and see them through to fifty.

Both went in quick succession and T&T had the opportunity to go straight through the Goring batting line up. However, when Goring skipper Jim Ross was dropped before he had scored an important opportunity was missed. In partnership with Jamie Vickery a fifty partnership was put on as Ross took the attack to the bowlers. The dismissal when it came was somewhat unusual when Ross hit an AJ leg stump full toss to long on where James took a well judged catch above his head. Vickery soon followed and a brake was put on Goring's scoring rate.

The Goring lower order all contributed and ensured that the full 45 overs were used up for a total of 176-8. However, at tea when the score was being discussed Lemmy very specifically announced that it was 32 short.

It proved to be short of what was required by more than that. James and Phil got T&T off to a flier with the fifty coming up in the ninth over. They hadn't quite made the 100 when Phil was caught at short fine leg off the back of the bat four short of fifty. James also went four short of fifty and Jamil went as soon as he got to fifty. Micky and Tim were left to see us home by 7 wickets with the best part of ten overs to spare.
