Theale & Tilehurst vs Warfield 24th July 2004

Having lost last week against Stratfield we had to win this game to stay in touch with Peppard and Purley.

On losing the toss we were put in to bat and were able to sit back and watch a superb opening partnership between James and Phil. Initially it was Phil who was the most fluent and his fifty came off the fewer balls, 58 compared to 70 for James. The 100 partnership came up in the 21st over and they then went past the previous club record partnership (also for the 1st wicket) of 185 and raised the first 200 partnership for the club. James by this stage was the more fluent and he was the first to 100 off 111 balls with Phil following off 112.

Both were dismissed as they tried to force the pace and with victory essential the decision was taken to declare at 269-3 off 42 overs.

When Sivapalan was dismissed in the first over by Jamil the plan seemed to be coming together. However, Ravi Peiris and Tim Wells trumped the feats of James and Phil by putting on 204 for the second wicket at an increasing rate. Wells had his good fortune on the way to 88 but Peiris' 117 was as good an innings as you will see at this level.

With wickets in hand Warfield were able to keep going at the target and achieved the impressive run chase with 10 balls of their innings to spare.
