For some players this was the seventh game in nine days and perhaps this was starting to catch up with them. Stand-in skipper Osman lost the toss and we were put in to bat on a typical BBC pitch where the new ball is a big advantage as it exacerbates the vagaries of the pitch.

The only people to blame for the first two wickets though were the batsman, Rog chasing a wide one and toe-ending it to mid-off and Phil falling for a slower ball and cutting it tamely to gully.

When Dennis and Ed also went cheaply we were 23-4 and in deep trouble. Spike and Stephen Wallace though steadied the ship putting on 32 for the fifth wicket before Stephen went for a very well made 19. Two further quick wickets fell before Spike and Rags came together for the largest partnership of the innings (37) for the 8th wicket with Rags hitting some lusty blows.

127-9 seemed to be a competitive total at tea but despite Osman taking an early wicket it didn't prove to be so. That the things T&T tried in the field didn't work was illustrated by the attempted pre-planned stumping between Bob and Ed. Lavers was prone to have a bit of a wander from the crease so it was agreed that when Ed gave the Papa Smurf call Bob would slip one down the leg side for the stumping attempt, the call went out and Ed initially headed off down the leg side and did remarkably well to get back across and take what must have been nearly an off-side wide.

Halford was the mainstay of the batting for the Beeb but was lucky to survive a confident run out appeal (i.e. we think it was well out) before going on to make 68 not out and see his team to victory.
