Theale & Tilehurst vs Nettlebed and Swinkham 14th August 2004

After four defeats on the trot T&T needed to win this game. In the return fixture earlier in the season Nettlebed had been very strong with some impressive individual players, on this week we caught them with many of their better players away and with them obviously struggling to get a team at all, as it was they entered the game with nine and were hoping that a tenth would come along.

Nettlebed is one those areas that catches the rain and had obviously done so in the week, and indeed hours, leading up to the game. The pitch was very soft and it was obviously going to be a good toss to win, as often happens teams that are already down on their luck continue in that vein, T&T had no hesitation in putting Nettlebed in to bat.

The first two overs of the innings were maidens, with one dropped catch, and it was the third over of the innings before things started happening. Griffith was well caught at a shortish mid wicket by Tim who then a couple of balls later took an even better catch running backwards at point to dismiss Vockins.

At 0-2 Young came in to bat and adopted the death or glory approach, the first scoring shot was a six straight back over Jamil's head. Jamil got his revenge when Young was caught off a skier by Fingers running back from 1st slip and added the wickets of Vickory and Simmons clean bowled.

Both Bryant and Simon Vines both hit some defiant late boundaries but Nettlebed never threatened to get a total that they could expect to defend.

Andy and Phil opened the batting and with only nine in the field regularly found the gaps and the boundaries to secure victory in the 14th over.

This was a much needed win for the 1sts as we look to finish the season in third place even if it wasn't the most satisfying game of cricket.
