The end of a league season always seems to come to soon but in some ways the end of this was very welcome. As a side we have got caught in a cycle of making the same mistakes week in week out and losing games that we should have won. Again we let a side get 20-30 more than they should have but more particularly we were bowled out with plenty of time to score the remaining runs - the mantra of we need to keep wickets in hand and if we bat all 45 over we'll win seems to be one that is instantly forgettable for us.
On a wet pitch it was a good toss to win and we had no hesitation in electing to field even though Mo, Jamil and Osman were still to arrive at the ground. As it was we were forced to take the field with 8 for the first three overs with Chris and Phil opening the bowling. Initially the bowling was tight but we were unable to take the chances that came our way - six chances going down in the first 20 overs. If these had been taken we could have gone straight through Hawley as Peppard had done the previous week and set up a comfortable run chase.
What the dropped catches meant was that Hawley were able to keep wickets in hand and during the later overs were able to pick up the pace and get the total up to 160. As mentioned this was 20-30 more than we should have let them score on the pitch but should have been well within our reach.
When the score was 65-1 in reply the watching correspondent from Goring must have been reporting back to his team mates that T&T were on their way to victory and Goring's place in division 1 was safe. However, just after he left four wickets fell for 10 runs and all of a sudden 161 looked a long way off.
Phil was the only batsman who could look both secure at the crease and score runs as he passed 50 for the seventh time in the league this season. Not only did Phil's innings set a new club record for runs in a league season (643) but it also took him past 1,000 runs for the club for the season. His innings deserved to be on the winning side but apart from Tim no-one was able to offer him the support needed.
When Phil was eighth out for 72 there were still 32 needed for victory which the bottom order was unable to achieve.
The second half of the season has been disappointing but we have still probably secured our best placing in the league as a club. At the end of the game Hawley celebrated their well deserved victory thinking it was likely to be enough to take them above Goring and secure their division 1 survival. However, Goring had very sensibly decided not to rely on us and had beaten Purley in a shock win to keep them above Hawley and probably send Hawley to division 2.
