Theale and Tilehurst vs Crowthorne 29th August 2004

In a straight 40 over game both skippers were perhaps surprisingly keen to bat first on a pitch that was in the later stages of drying out, Crowthorne were perhaps unlucky to win the toss and therefore bat first.

Flood started the innings well for Crowthorne, moving the ball around well for singles and putting the odd bad ball away. It was a surprise when he played an ill-judged pull shot to a ball that was too full and was bowled. Rodwell came out and immediately showed an attacking intent with some powerful drives, he was having a good duel with Rags but Rags appeared to have won it when Rodwell went back to the slower ball and got caught in front of all three stumps. However, the umpire for some reason deemed it was not out. Rags was not the only unlucky one though as in the next over Smith was given out by the same umpire to one that was not quite so close to say the least.

Rodwell and Elrick formed a useful partnership, both powerful on the drive, until Elrick was run out having been guilty of ball watching rather than responding to the call of his partner. When Rodwell went, somewhat ironically caught by Rags, it was left to Imms to guide the lower order to 186 which seemed a competitive total. A word here for Trevor who bowled a spell that was far better than his figures suggest, a couple of very straightforward chances were missed off his bowling and in the middle of his spell in particular he maintained a very good line and length.

Rog got the T&T reply off to a lively start hitting seven 4s in his innings of 30. After his dismissal it was very much a tale of two partnerships, first Ed and Dennis put on 59 for the second wicket followed by Dennis and Cameron putting on 77 for the third. Dennis was very much in the lead for both of these partnerships, the second ball he received was driven imperiously back past the bowler for four and after that he never looked back.

Having had three Sunday games on the trot that had gone the last over and the best result of the three being a draw nine down it was good to get a victory, and a very comfortable victory at that with seven wickets in hand and over six wickets to spare. It was also good that it came from an all round team performance although Dennis' innings was undoubtedly the stand out performance.
