Theale and Tilehurst vs Purley 30th August 2004

BACK

Report by Fingers

In a bank holiday fixture two experimental sides took to the pitch perhaps knowing as little about themselves as they did the opposition. Following a shower just as the game was supposed to start both teams were keen to bowl first and not expose their relatively short batting line ups.

As it was Alan Schofield won the toss for Purley so Rog and Dave went out to open up for T&T. For the second day running Rog got some early lusty blows away before being bowled. Dave was battling it out and doing a useful job in seeing off the new ball but was struggling to get the ball away, when he went in the 11th over it brought Khadim in to join Jamil. No disrespect to anyone else but if we were going to get to a decent total this partnership had to fire.

Jamil hasn't been in the best of form recently but played some typical shots on his way to 49, Khadim was also playing a typically conservative innings and the partnership went past fifty. When Khadim was the second of the two out with the score on 100, unluckily run out at the bowler's end backing up, a score of 160 would have represented a very good effort. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it that far with Bob last man out with the score on 136.

At the end of the 16th over when Paul Measham and son James Measham had taken the score to 65-0 victory for Purley seemed a formality. Enter Jamil and his three card trick - having played against them several times indoors and out and on occasions been very destructive with the ball in particular Jamil is well known to several of the Purley players and some of them may have warned Measham junior about him. He was on strike for Jamil's first ball as Jamil marked out a run up that must have been at least thirty yards, he then absolutely steamed in to bowl the gentlest of slower balls that was spooned up to cover with Measham through his shot before the ball was half way down.

To make it really interesting Khadim then took three wickets in four balls and the score had become 67-4. Paul Reber and Nick Holman then steadied the ship to take the score past 100 before Rog dismissed both of them in quick succession. However, at 131-6 it really looked like the game had gone before yet another twist, Rog caught and bowled Mike Schofield before Fingers took two wickets in the next over to leave it 135-9 - two needed with one wicket in hand. Lincoln survived the one remaining ball in Fingers' over before Williams edged the first ball of Rog's next over to third man for the two required to win.

Not the highest scoring game of cricket but a very close and enjoyable one nonetheless - I can say that again having given someone a good stuffing yesterday.
