Theale and Tilehurst vs Old Basing 5th September 2004

BACK

Report by Fingers

There were many similarities in this game to the game played at BCS the day before. Both teams were keen to bat first on winning the toss and again most of the T&T top order got in but didn’t go on to play a big innings.

Rog and Ed got the innings off to a quick start but the rate could not be maintained through a combination of good bowling and good fielding from an Old Basing side that included several very promising colts. Chilly briefly threatened to make a sustained acceleration before being caught on the boundary and wickets fell away to leave T&T all out for 181. Following their success with the bat for the final wicket against Old Basing last year this time the partnership between Fingers and Bob only lasted one ball, some members of the team struggling to suppress their relief at seeing Bob getting another nought as the race for the duck cup heats up at the end of the season.

A score of 181 looked about 30-40 short of par at tea. When Old Basing were 99-2 off 13 overs and with Pope and Willcock scoring freely it looked about 130-140 short of what was needed. However, Pope was finally dismissed and when Stephen took an excellent catch at point to get rid of Brown T&T were back in with a chance.

Osman had been strangely absent with the ball at the start of the innings but we soon discovered where he had been. Having not only taken inspiration from Chef he’d obviously nipped off to see if he could borrow his deer stalker, rifle and recipe for rabbit stew. The leg injury that had prevented him opening the bowling (pure genius to even use the same injury excuse) had seemingly cleared up now that the very young Old Basing lower order were at the crease.

Os’ loosener yorked Gunn middle stump, Bailey soon followed also clean bowled and then there was a desperate run out. Os then had the excellent young Willcock caught behind (Dennis’ 50th dismissal for the club) and 141-3 had become 163-8. T&T were now favourites with the excitement building. With batsman at the crease who looked like they would struggle to score the runs needed Rog decided to crank up the tension a bit more by slipping a five wides down the leg side before bowling Smith.

It was left to Osman to apply the finishing touches to his stew with the final wicket in the next over to secure an unlikely victory by eight runs.

This result confirms the topsy turvy season the Sunday side has had. There are games we have lost against teams we should have done a lot better against and here was a team we have beaten that had a lot more talent than some of those we have lost to. If the game was to be replayed in 2-3 years though it would be interesting to see what the result would be.
