Theale and Tilehurst vs Bedlow 25th September 2004

Report by Fingers

After eight years as captain Fingers walked to the middle and called tails one last time. "Tails never fails" worked once more and T&T elected to take the field on a pitch that looked like it might have a few tricks up its sleeve.

As the start time arrived there was some light rain in the air and there was some uncertainty about whether we should start or not. El Presidente though rose from his Inzy chair and announced that we should start - it seemed that he was keen not to allow a bit of rain stop him from playing his final game of the season.

During the first seven overs the rain got heavier and it became apparent that we would have to leave the field - again it was the President taking the lead announcing that we had now been on the field long enough to warrant staying for tea so we may as well go off. Many probably believed that was that but fortunately the weather finally cleared and allowed the Bledlow openers to pick up where they left off.

Fingers finally got the first breakthrough when he bowled Hinks but the Bledlow batsman continued to play commendably straight in attack, having been dropped off the last ball of his previous over Mould took a particular liking to Fingers taking his next over for 19 runs. Jamil soon dismissed Mould with a ball that stayed so low that the bails overtook the batsman on his way back to the pavilion but Bledlow continued to score quickly and declared at 192-5 off 36 overs.

The early T&T batsman struggled against the accuracy and seam movement of Spooner who knew how to get the best out of the conditions. Jamil briefly threatened taking three consecutive fours of L Witney but when he was sixth out with the score at 78 it seemed the best that T&T could do was get a draw.

Osman batted well for 18 but it was left to Fingers and Gloves to bat out the last 40 balls for a draw which they did without adding to the score, Fingers out having a wild swing at the last ball of the game.
