Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Yately 1 30th April 2005

Whether it's because teams want practice batting first in early season conditions or there has been a shift in terms of preference another opposition won the toss and elected to bat.

The early exchanges were well contained by the T&T bowlers with Doc making the first breakthrough when he nipped one back off the seam to bowl Leory. Os was bowling well but without any luck and it wasn't until AJ came on that further wickets fell. First Trustlove was caught behind and then Lawrence cut the ball in to the gully where Fingers completed a catch in the style of AJ (no hands used and the ball being wedged in to the arm pit).

The Yateley innings continued with the run rate never moving far from three an over. Wickets continued to fall in clusters, Jamil bowling Lipo and Regan with consecutive deliveries; Regan offering no shot to one that bowled him middle and off stump.

Doc came back to pick up the last two wickets to complete what was overall a very good bowling and fielding performance. A total though of 125 would be hard to get if Yateley bowled well.

When James hit the second ball of the innings over mid off for a one bounce four things looked promising, however he was soon caught at cover. When Jamil hit a large six on to the roof of the social club things again looked promising but he was soon caught at mid off. In between Phil had been bowled by a good yorker to leave us at 17-3.

At 59-6 things didn't look any better but AJ was batting well and enjoying in particular the leg spin of Gale. He and Fingers started to put together a partnership and at 116-6 T&T had put themselves in to the position of favourites. However, Fingers chipped tamely to mid wicket and then the returning Lipo produced another yorker to get rid of AJ.

With only 8 needed we still had a chance but unfortunately Doc played on to give the final wicket to Tull and Yateley victory by 7 runs. To lose was a disappointment but there were plenty of positives to take from this game, particularly the performance in the field.
