Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Yately 2 30th April 2005

BACK

Report by Chef

Seems like the 2nd XI vice captain is also a useless tosser.  So we were inserted to bat.  On paper it was a team that could go cheaply and on a wet pitch it could be a short game.  Eddie and Mo both decided to turn up fashionably late and when Eddie arrived he chose not to open, so Rog was put up the order.

Rog & Meady set off quite nicely mainly due to A West bowling a few wides.  I am assured it was not THE Adam West as there was no cape in sight, he was also about 30 years younger.  Davis then pulled a muscle and a change of bowling saw skipper Goddard on, not exactly known for his pace.  Eddie's experience showed through as he said it will take Roger 3 balls before he has a go and it will be 6 or out.  So first ball to Meady was a dot ball.  Meady then got a single to leave Rog on strike.  First ball was up in the block hole and Rog tried to hit it but it didn't go anywhere.  Second ball was short and Roger dispatched it for 4.  Eddie started putting his gloves on.  Goddard dropped it short, very short.  Roger swung.  The ball then pitched.  Roger swung again.  Roger came back round for a third go, by which time the ball was rolling towards the stumps and barely dislodged the bail.

Eddie and Meady then kept the scoreboard ticking over.

During the game we were trying to think up a nickname for Meady.  MEady having broken his own and then Spike's last week, Spike suggested that he could be called Shipman because he keeps murdering old bats.  I was a little concerned as he was borrowing my bat today, a bat I have never played with yet, other than indoor nets.

With the score at 106 off 30, Eddie and Meady started to increase the run rate.  Eddie more out of tiredness than anything else, was dismissed for 38 after a 123 partnership with Meady.  They had both given us a great platform to get a big score.  Chef went out, then promptly came back in.  Unfortunately with only 9 overs to go we had to have a go, so Spike came in and unselfishly had a swing and hit a lovely six but was then dismissed by a yorker.  It was then down to Rags to get singles to get Phil to his hundred.  Rags gladly delivered 5 singles and Phil did the rest, getting to his Hundred with the penultimate ball.

It was a fantastic innings from Meady on a difficult pitch.  More innings like this and we will be looking for a new vice captain in the 2nds.

Many sandwiches, pizza's and donuts later, Yately came in to bat.  Mo took a wicket early on with Lawrence playing on. Bob then struck later.  Arslan was brought on and in his last over took a wicket.  Rags was then brought on and took a wicket, followed by Chef who also took a wicket.  Meady hoping that the change of bowling would continue to bring wickets, then brought on Rog.  Well you're luck has to run out some time.  He brought Indy on who took 2 wickets, both bowled and then Mo cleaned up the tail.  They were all out for 129 (although it didn't really add up below).

It was a good start to the season, everybody got a go and everybody contributed.

At the end of the game Meady gave me my bat and he had broken the bottom of it but said it was a good bat.  So he lives up to his nickname and it seems he doesn't limit it to Old Bats.
