Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Emmbrook & Barewood 7th May 2005

BACK

Report by Fingers

The first league game and as with any season it was important to get off to a good start. Cat won the toss and elected to put E&B in to bat with Lemmy and Doc opening the bowling for T&T.

After 11 balls a heavy shower came over and delayed proceedings for 15-20 minutes. The hope was that this would liven up the pitch and it seemed to have worked when Pedley was late on a pull shot to Doc and Spike took the catch at square leg. Trevor Clacey had already played a couple of cut shots for four when the obvious decision to put a second gully in place was taken; two balls later Clacey cut the ball in the air to the newly placed second gully but Fingers put the catch down. Fortunately the drop wasn't too costly as Clacy soon edged Doc to Phil behind the stumps.

Lemmy was bowling well and finally picked up a deserved wicket when Hayman sliced a ball to cover. There then followed the main partnership of the innings as Will Layne and Cranville put on 76 for the fourth wicket. E&B reached the much heralded (by the President at least) position of 100-3 off thirty overs. However, rather than going on to post a score in excess of 180 as the second half of the plan goes it was Jamil with the ball that had the main say (he went on to take 6-16 and reclaim the 1st XI best bowling performance).

Cranville was the first to go when he chipped Jamil to mid-on and the lower half of the order struggled against Jamil's pace. It was only the innings of Layne and some good late hitting by Lazenbury that got the total up to 147 all out in the final over.

This is a typical early season total to chase and as stated before it's all about keeping wickets in hand. James went early as he continues to strive for some early season form but there was a consolidation between Cat and Meady. It wasn't until the 19th over that the second wicket fell when Meady finally succeeded in giving a successful catch to Clacey at first slip. Two balls later Jamil was bowled by what was described as a jaffer before Cat and Dopey again stabilised the position.

With Cat showing the form of last season T&T were always in control while he was at the crease and despite losing a couple of further wickets T&T coasted home to win by 5 wickets with 8 overs to spare.

This was a good start to the season but we started well last year. This time we need to keep it going all season.
