Theale & Tilehurst 2nd XI vs Woodley 2 7th May 2005

Report by Chef

Well the skipper carried on his form as useless tosser and we were inserted to bat. Eddie and Micky started off well, dispatching the frequent bad balls. The first wicket went down at 52. Micky however carried on his form and was finally dismissed for 64 with the score at 106 for 3. It was a good platform to build on but sadly we set off at demolishing as opposed to building, with the next three wickets going for 16 runs. It was then left to Rags and Osman to increase the pace with their 34 partnership. This then brought out Chef to the crease. Os and Chef put on a record unbeaten partnership of 45off not many balls. It would have been more but Os was running far too many 2's and Chef's post half marathon fitness seems to have completely gone now. Os finished on 33no, Chef finished on 25no off just 12 balls. We managed to notch up 203 which should be a winning total.

Woodley set off at a reasonable pace but a change from the skipper brought a wicket for Rags, which was the start of the rot for Woodley. Geddes was soon dismissed next over by Osman and this was a key wicket. Skipper then took off Os and brought on Chef from Road End. With the wind behind him he paraglided into bowl and was quicker and getting more lift. Ahmed went on the back foot to defend a quicker lifting ball and dolleyed it up to the Skipper. Two balls later Chef managed to get a shooter on middle stump and dismissed Brant for a duck.

The Skipper then made another change for a wicket and brought on Chilli, who duly obliged by bowling a charging bull. Sadly we were running out of overs and not picking up wickets quick enough as the left handed Stanley hung around. Arslan then came on to bowl and picked up Raja caught behind. With the score on 102-8 we were in no danger of losing but winning was beginning to look unlikely. Whitmarsh was brought to the crease who then destroyed Arslan and Osman's figures by bludgeoning 31 in quick time. His innings was the only exciting thing that happened in their innings.

So the game petered out into a dull draw. Woodley not reaching 75% of our score meant they got no points, other than their bonus. Although we didn't win, there were a lot of positives in the game and 18 points is not to be sniffed at.
