Report by Fingers
Winning at cricket like most sports is about habit and momentum. Having won in week one it was important to follow this up with another good result. Cat won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bowl first.
Chris and Os opened the bowling for T&T. Three or four years ago they were opening the bowling together for the u17s so it was very good to see them having progressed to the extent of opening the bowling together for the 1st XI.
Os struck first when Sivapalan was caught by Tim at point. There are many of us that think that Chris will go straight through a team in the very near future. Again he bowled without luck and again he didn’t get the rewards that he deserved for being the pick of the bowlers.
In the corresponding fixture last year Ravi Peiris and Tim Wells had put on over 200 together for the Warfield 2nd wicket. They again had a good partnership but neither was quite as fluent as they had been the year before. Wells was the first to go bowled by AJ shortly after drinks and whilst wickets weren’t falling Warfield weren’t really scoring heavily or quickly either. Peiris rode his luck, dropped in consecutive overs by Fingers at slip off Jamil until he was run out for 67. Os and Chris came back at the end and picked up some late wickets to leave Warfield 171-6 at the close. A total that T&T would have settled for before the first ball had been bowled.
The T&T reply started badly when Meady cut the last ball of the first over straight to point. Cat son followed edging Ruddle to slip to leave us 23-2. Jamil and Dopey launched a recovery but every time we appeared to be getting on top another wicket would fall to put the game back in the balance. At 100-5 the game was very much in the balance but again we seemed to be getting in front when AJ and Spike added 45 for the sixth wicket.
At 170-7 the game seemed to finally be ours but Os was needlessly run out the ball after hitting a boundary and then Chris was bowled with the scores level. One run needed, one wicket left.
Unfortunately the game then ended amongst some controversy, to the first ball he faced Phil got an inside edge on the ball people on the boundary could hear but not one that stopped him being given out lbw to leave the match tied; the mixed reactions amongst the Warfield players at the end suggested that some of them at least knew what had happened. It should never have got to that situation though and in reality this was 10 points thrown away. In what promises to be a tight division this could be something we regret later in the season.
