Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Waltham St Lawrence 18th June 2005

BACK

Report by Fingers

On the hottest day of the year so far Cat finally lost a toss. However, WSL skipper Chris England decided to bat first so we probably ended up doing what we wanted to do anyway. There was one change from the team last week with Chilly coming in to replace the unfortunate AJ who has broken his wrist.

Ashton and Pickering opened the batting for WSL and with the odd alarm took the score to 34. Ashton then dropped a ball in to mid wicket and called for the single, the ball though was hit straighter and firmer than he thought and Jamil moved round and with a direct hit at one stump ran out the batsman by a yard.

Pickering was the next to go bowled by Jamil but at 91-2 WSL were sitting fairly pretty and must have been looking at a total in excess of 200. Jamil then got rid of Johnson and Tim took an excellent catch at mid wicket to get rid of the dangerous looking Hussain. Fingers then dismissed Dave Downes and England in the same over and the score was 121-6.

Fingers kept chipping away at the lower order supported by some very good catching although not everyone seemed to have noticed. When Noel Downes was bowled by Fingers to give him his sixth wicket Dopey rushed up and observed that there was a chance of a fivefer. Which incidentally is a new bowling record for the 1st XI - Chef

The WSL innings ended as it had started when Dopey ran out Rasool with a direct hit from cover. 153 all out represented another very good effort from T&T in the field.

Perhaps because T&T had relied so much on spin WSL started with the old ball. This kept a check on the early scoring rate but it was only when the new ball was taken that the breakthrough was made when Noel Downes got one to turn and bounce a bit more to take the top of James' off stump.

Jamil showed he was in no mood to mess around by hitting his first ball for six. With James and Phil having put on 42 for the first wicket there was then a partnership of 58 for the second wicket before Jamil became the second wicket to fall, again to a very good ball. Phil perhaps wasn't at his most fluent but he again showed that if you don't get him early he can go on and make a big score.

Phil and Dopey batted patiently and safely for the third wicket to steer T&T home by 8 wickets with 18 overs to spare.
