Theale and Tilehurst Friendly XI vs London Theatres 14th August 2005

Considering all the rain that there had been on Saturday the pitch was remarkably firm for this game and on winning the toss London Theatres had little hesitation in choosing to bat first.

Kuston and Chisnell had put on a sizeable opening partnership in this fixture last year so there was some relief when Bob made an early breakthrough by bowling Chisnell who was playing an overly ambitious leg side shot. This breakthrough was soon followed when Bob bowled Parry and Os made a double break through when he dismissed Holmes and Wise in the same over.

47-4 represented a good start for T&T but Mutton was the first of the lower middle order batsman to make a worthwhile contribution. T&T didn’t quite have the penetration needed to go through the London Theatres batting and couldn’t stem the boundary that seemed to come each over and keep the scoring rate going.

Rog bowled well and picked up two wickets but the London Theatres innings made it past 200 and finished on 216-8. This was probably 30-40 more than was par for the course and certainly more than they should have got after being 47-4.

T&T needed a big innings from one of the top three if they were to challenge the London Theatres total; Micky worked hard for his 28 but neither Rog or Dopey were able to get going. The main contribution came from Osman who continued his development as a batsman in scoring his second fifty of the season and was last out for a very well made 70, a new personal best. The main feature of the innings was his straight driving although the most remarkable shot was a reverse pull off a full toss that went for four through deep backward point.

At 107-4 T&T had needed seven an over to win the game and with Rags at the crease with Os there was a chance, it was a similar position to the one last week at Marlow Park. The difference this time was that no-one was able to stay with the main player and build partnerships to get T&T close to the total. As it was the lower order fell away and T&T ended up well short of the target
