Theale & Tilehurst 1st XI vs Stratfield Turgis 27th August 2005

To keep the chasing pack at bay and to keep the pressure on Shinfield at the top it was essential that we won this game. There was a late change to the T&T side with Meady having to drop out due to a dickey tummy, the first time this season he's been selected for the 1sts and been in the runs, and Ed stepping in to his place.

Cat won the toss and inevitably elected to field. The T&T bowlers took some time to get going and Steve Clarke brought up the 50 for the opening partnership with a six over long off. This certainly seemed to wake up Lemmy as next ball was quicker and shorter and was gloved to Phil behind the stumps. Stancliffe and Nicholas soon followed both bowled by Lemmy and Headford who had initially been quite extravagant went in to his shell.

Doc had deserved a wicket for much of his spell and Sandland obviously agreed with this as he padded up and promptly walked off when the ball thudded in to his pad without even looking at the umpire. A brake was put on the ST innings with Jamil bowling very well and picking up a couple of wickets. When the ninth wicket went with the score on 121 it looked like we would finish the job early but Norford and Ayers batted sensibly for the last wicket and added a further 29 runs undefeated.

On a pitch that was playing truly but slowly this was well within reach. Shaun Spence worked up a good head of steam but Chilly and Cat batted well at the top of the order. Perhaps the most bizarre runs were four leg byes when Spence banged one in short and it brushed off the top of Chilly's cap and over the wicket keeper to the boundary.

After Chilly departed there was a slight wobble with Jamil and Dennis going in the same over. However, Ed was able to build a partnership with Cat during which probably the most remarkable shot was a hook by Ed for four which he played whilst falling over.

It was perhaps fitting though that for the second week running it was Cat that hit the winning runs. It wasn't chanceless this week but was still a fine innings and gives him some remarkable figures for the season.

What happened in the other games will determine what pressures are on us next week but the main thing is that our fate remains in our own hands.
