Theale and Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Purley 29th August 2005

BACK

Report by Chef

It's been a long time since I've skippered a side, mainly because my last two attempts were rained off and cancelled.  Anyway having looked at the side I had inherited I felt it wise to warn the Purley captain that we didn't have much batting and if he wanted to make a game of it, it would be wise to bat first.  Some things never change and when I lost the toss, I was hardly surprised.  So we were kindly put in to bowl.

Chef bowled a consistent outside off stump line and Nanan edged one to slip but unfortunately was just too high for Fingers fingers.  It wasn't an expensive drop as shortly afterwards he dollied one up to Khadim off Lemmy.  What came next was a beautiful array of shots, Allen predominantly off side, Livingstone all around.

Mo and Arslan bowled well  and kept a tight line but struggled to keep tabs on the batsmen.  Fingers was very much dot ball or 6 with no in between but again most of them were off good balls.  Khadim bowled with "variation".

Allen was dropped in his 30's and could have been stumped off Fingers later on and continued to make us pay as he reached 112 not out.  Livingstone didn't give a chance but Lemmy bowled him with an excellent delivery.

Now the scoreboard doesn't really reflect it but we bowled well and fielded well.  The over rate seemed poor but the combination of the left and right hand and picking the ball out of various local shrubberies, it wasn't really surprising.  They finished up on 246 for 2.

It is hindsight that I realise that my inspiring half time speech may have been misconstrued.  "We've not got much batting today so bat for as long as you can".

Needing over 6 an over it would prove difficult, especially as Mattingly and Schofield were both bowling well.  The run rate never really started and when Phil tried to accelerate he was caught on 47.  Mo was dismissed later on playing on to the Dave Harvey like bowling of Gavin Buck.  It was then down to the last ball when Khadim made a rash shot and was caught on 18.  We ended up on 108 for 3.

In a previous report this year Fingers uncharacteristically slagged off a an opponent for negative play on a Sunday.  Sadly today it turned out to be us, which is strange as none of the teams I have ever captained have played for a draw before.  A game to be confined to the anals of history (no I have spelt it correclty!)
