Theale and Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Valley End 17th September 2005

This was the final T&T home game of the season and to fit in with other recent games was fairly high scoring. The game was a straight 40 over game and Valley End won the toss and elected to bat.

Peploe was the first to go with the score on 14 bowled by Bob who bowled a tidy opening spell. At the other end Cat was also keeping it tight but didn't have any luck to pick up a wicket. Most of the Valley End top order got a start but Nehal and Fingers were managing to pick up wickets and at 128-6 T&T were seemingly on top.

However, it's fair to say that Valley End had adjusted their batting order to give everyone a game and Tomlinson and Redwood came together to put on a cleanly hit 84 for the seventh wicket. Redwood did give a chance early on but after this they both played well and managed to find the boundary on a regular basis.

It was Rags that finally made the breakthrough and Bob returned to pick up the final couple of wickets in consecutive balls. 223 all out probably represented about par for the course and a good effort from Valley End considering no batsman had made a fifty.

The T&T innings started badly with Eddie nicking his first ball to the keeper. Worse was to follow with Meady also going cheaply and the innings subsided to 44-4. It was Rags and Cat that got us back on track with a partnership of 74 before Rags continued the trend started by Valley End of batsman getting out in the forties, unfortunately it was to continue later.

Nehal and Cat also got a partnership going and with them at the crease eight and over for the last eight overs seemed possible. However, when they went in quick succession the realistic chances of T&T winning disappeared with them. The innings ended in comical fashion as the two leading contenders in the duck cup added to their tallies in unusual fashion: first Fingers was run out without facing a ball and just as he was resigning himself to collecting the duck cup Bob managed to get himself out hit wicket to stay hard in his heels with 3 games to go.
