Theale and Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Warfield 18th September 2005

A predominantly young T&T side travelled to Warfield for this match against the club that the 1sts had just pipped for promotion in the league season. Warfield won the toss and elected to bowl with two of their 1st XI bowlers opening the attack.

On a sporting pitch the early T&T order struggled with the pace of Winston Murphy and the accuracy and swing of Graham Morris. Of the top order it was Mo that was able to hold the innings together with a well made 28. However the innings had subsided to 61-8 when Arsalan joined Fingers at the crease. The possibility of the game being over by tea was very real unless a partnership could be forged. With plenty of time at their disposal Arsalan and Fingers patiently built a partnership and with the occasional boundary were able to move the score along.

As the partnership took the score past 100 T&T were giving themselves half a chance of making a game of it. The partnership finally came to a close when Fingers was bowled by Kamardeen with the partnership of 66 having taken the score to 127; the innings closed soon after with the total on 131. To be fair to Warfield they could have left their opening bowlers on and sought to close out the game very quickly but this shouldn't detract from what a mature innings Arsalan played to finish up top scorer with a personal best of 31 not out.

To say the first over of the Warfield innings was action packed would be an under statement. Winston Murphy whacked the first ball through mid wicket for four, there was then a single before Dave Muttock whacked the third ball through mid on for four. The fourth ball was a dot before Muttock skied a leg stump full toss which Oneal did well to catch at mid wicket. Murphy was back on strike therefore for the final ball of the over which clean bowled him middle stump. The score at the end of the first over therefore was 9-2, this game seemed determined to proceed at a pace.

Mo was very unlucky not to take a wicket in his impressive spell of six overs and the rest of the show was left to run outs and Fingers. The third wicket to fall was Doberski with Imran and Rog combining well to complete the run out. The other two run outs are also worthy of mention for very different reasons; Ruddle was superbly run out by a direct hit by Arsalan from fine leg whilst the other happened in slow motion. Kamardeen played the ball out on the off side and called for what would have been a well run two for any pair at the crease, the problem was that Kamardeen's partner was Terry Emery who whilst now in his seventies is still a competent batsman struggles with the running between the wickets. It almost seemed cruel to complete what was an entirely inevitable run out.

With the last pair at the crease Kamardeen decided it was death or glory, he was lucky once when a difficult chance was palmed over the boundary for six before going next ball, a similar shot mis-timed and being chipped up to Os at mid wicket. This meant that T&T had managed to close out what had earlier seemed an improbable 32 run victory.
