Theale & Tilehurst Friendly XI vs Yateley 1 29th April 2006

This was the final warm up game before the league season starts and put us up against a team we meet in the league in two weeks time. Yateley won the toss and on a pitch with a bit of dampness in it elected to bowl.

Davies and Lipo opened the bowling for Yateley and after the first couple of overs both settled in to a good line and length and kept the pressure on James and Phil. Phil was having something of a charmed life including a ball that firmly clipped the outside of his off stump without dislodging the bail but it was James that was the first to go after they had put on 58 for the first wicket. Crofty then followed immediately to the same bowler and there was a need for a decent partnership if T&T were to post a competitive total.

Meady and Phil started the rebuilding process but the main partnership was between Meady and Micky for the 4th wicket. Meady was the more fluent finding the boundary regularly before he and Micky both went near the end trying to lift the scoring rate. Rog was able to come in and strike some late boundaries to lift the score to 224 which seemed a decent effort on a good but understandably slow early season surface.

Micky and Pawan opened the bowling for T&T and Pawan immediately struck having Shafi caught at cover. However, the T&T bowling generally lacked penetration and Viner and Lipo were able to take advantage and accumulate runs at the necessary rate. There was only one chance when Viner was dropped in the gully as a variety of bowlers were tried to no avail. It was Crofty that eventually made the breakthrough when Viner was caught at mid-off but by then the score had moved on to 153. If this could have been immediately followed up with a couple of further wickets there was still a way back in to the game but Muir was able to play a good supporting role to Lipo who went on to reach a chanceless 100.

Yateley run out comfortable winners even if there were only seven balls left at the end of the game.
